Mousing Around For Treasure
A downloadable project
This is an alternative way of playing Temple Run - in browser, using a mouse, but in a completely nontraditional way.
Going into this project, we were thinking about how to completely change the idea of a mouse as a controller. Initially, we attempted to map WASD to the mouse's cursor reader, but we weren't able to find the software to do so, so instead we decided to map the traditional mouse-and-keyboard input and instead turn it so that the mouse could not only be a mouse but also a WASD pad at the same time. Eventually, we settled on the idea of having players treat a mouse beyond the simple "idea" of what a mouse was, rekeying inputs so that players would have to hold it in a completely different grip from how a mouse is held traditionally. In doing so, the grip ends up looking more like a claw grip you would use for a controller, but we thought it was interesting to consider, especially since the mouse doesn't have either triggers or bumpers (it's a three-button mouse). But maybe that would change considering how gaming mouses have extra side-buttons–maybe that claw grip could also work there!
We are betting on the fact that as the game progresses in speed and you become pretty focused on the game you forget that you're using a mouse in a nontraditional way, and that you instinctively have to keep reminding yourself that you're playing the mouse in the form of a controller.
